The Invisibility of Working from Home

A very Merry New Year to you all. I hope you enjoyed the festivities.

Right, now down to business, be warned, this is going to be a rant! If you don’t enjoy a good rant then read no further!…

I have had a bee in bonnet, a bee that I have tried to ignore but that has been buzzing around for the whole festive period. Here goes…

I own my own business. I spent time setting up my own business and I now make money from my business. Not like millions of monies, but enough to call it viable. Well done me right? My husband goes to work. He worked hard to get his job and he also makes monies. Well done to him right? BUT, and here comes that bee, when my husband finished for work for the Christmas break every single person we spoke to uttered the words “So, have you finished for Christmas now”, followed by “ooo, it must be nice to have a break, when are you off until?”. EVERY SINGLE PERSON.

Ask me how many people asked me the same questions, go on… NONE! Not a single person asked me when I was breaking up for Christmas. Not a single person wished me a lovely break.

Seriously! Do I not work? Do I not get up at the same time as my husband, work all day and then go to bed at the same time? Does working from home not count as work? Because I do the school run twice a day, does that mean the rest of the day I am not working? Do people know how hard I work? Do they know that whilst my husband (and I’m sorry, I have no gripe against him, he’s just the good example), that whilst he was “enjoying his much needed week off”, I was working until 4am trying to get work done during the Christmas holidays.

Just because I work from home, just because I have my own business, this does not mean that I don’t work as hard as you, or as hard as Mr Bloggs down the road!

I work too. I work hard. Give me the respect of acknowledging that and wishing me a nice break over Christmas. That’s all I ask.

And there you have it. Rant over. Phew! It’s not often I have a rant, but this hit hard. Sometimes I feel a little invisible, and this just added to that.

Do you work from home? Has anything like this ever happened to you? Share your story in the comments, I’d love to hear from you xx
